Superhero Design Challenge

Goal: Work in a team to design a new Superhero. Make sure to specify the superpowers, and several characteristics such as physical appearance, costume, tools, vulnerabilities, or sidekicks. 

Team size of 3 – 5

Time limit 15 – 20  minutes (or as decided by leader)

Product: a sketch of the Superhero done by hand or computer


Warm up: Individual work
2 minutes
Take a minute or 2 to think about what superhero the world needs

Superhero design: teamwork
13 – 18 minutes
Work together to design and sketch a new Superhero
Use Google Draw or a similar sharing app to communicate ideas through drawings, images, and text, and to create your presentation sketch

If you are stuck, consider these:

  • Try individual thinking vs group discussion
  • Define the communities and environments where the Superhero is needed
  • Come up with a name for the Superhero
  • Plan and divide out tasks and set time limits


Design presentations (optional)

2 minutes per team

Each team presents and explains their Superhero design using a presentation format that they come up with.

Outdoor Playspace Design Challenge

Goal: Work in a team to design an outdoor space for a recreation activity of your choice. Some activity ideas:  climbing, balance/agility, lawn games, theater, board games.

Team size: 3 – 5

Time limit: 15 – 20  minutes (or as decided by leader)

Product: a sketch of the Playspace done by hand or computer (For an in-person version, the product is made out of simple materials). 


Warm up: Individual work
2 minutes
Take a minute or 2 to think about what type of space to design

Playspace design: team work
13 – 18 minutes
Work together to design and sketch a Playspace design
Use Google Draw or a similar sharing app to communicate ideas through drawings, images, and text, and to create your presentation sketch. (For an in-person version, create a physical model using the materials available)

If you are stuck, consider these strategies:

  • Try individual thinking vs group discussion
  • Defining the goals, themes, or uses of the Playspace more clearly
  • Create a name for the Playspace
  • Plan and divide out tasks and set time limits
